Skills and Ideas Taught: Critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills driven by Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS®) procedures and techniques and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) core competencies.
Goal or Challenge: Players must correctly treat and save the patient. The learner/player must properly resuscitate and diagnose a patient with a trauma injury before the patient becomes too unstable.
Primary Audience: Medical students and residents training in trauma life support.
Assessment Approach: If the player properly diagnoses and treats the patient, they are ultimately successful. If the patient becomes too unstable the player will fail the case. In addition, user interactions are stored in a log file to be compared against expert behavior.
Description: Pulse!! presents the player with clinical cases in real time, immersing learners in a high-fidelity virtual medical facility. The patient character exhibits symptoms related to a condition and progressively changes appropriately over time. The patient character is responsive to medical treatment or absence of treatment providing feedback to the learner via the condition. Pulse!! focuses on high-level critical thinking, diagnostic reasoning and clinical skills conforming to ATLS® training and ACGME core competencies.
