Description: Proactively conducting goals of care conversations with patients who have a serious illness is important in ensuring that the patient’s values, goals, and treatment preferences are followed. This educational virtual environment is designed to provide participants with meaningful opportunities to acquire and practice communication skills needed to conduct high quality goals of care conversations with patients who have a serious illness. The learner practices these skills in an immersive and realistic environment, with immediate feedback from a virtual mentor to help reinforcing important skills. This virtual training program will help busy clinicians practice including the patient and their care givers in making quality of life decisions that meet their own in what are understandably stressful situations.

Skills and Ideas Taught: Enhanced understanding of key elements of a goals of care conversation. Conduct a goals of care conversation. Demonstrate understanding of special considerations related to goals of care conversations with surrogates.

Goal or Challenge: Identify the key elements of a goals of care conversation. Prepare for and conduct a goals of care conversation with a patient. Describe special considerations related to goals of care conversations with surrogates.

Primary Audience: VHA Physicians, Advance Practice Nurses, and Physician Assistants

Assessment Approach: Goals of Care Conversation Module measures learning through the entire navigation of both Patient Scenarios which includes a debrief that provides a final score for each Scenario.
