Skills and Ideas Taught: Natural and human history
Goal or Challenge: Each level revolves around an important milestone in the natural history of the Earth. The player’s goal in each level is to encourage the evolution and diversification of the life around it. As an example, level 2 revolves around animal life leaving the ocean for the first time. The steps toward achieving this involve the player growing a tree and adding nutrients to the ground by dropping branches and leaves, while also protecting fish from a large predator.
Primary Audience: We have observed a range of people from young children to retirees playing and enjoying Evergreen at convention all around the world. The educational elements make it especially well-suited to a younger audience who will enjoy the open and creative gameplay while learning about natural history.
Assessment Approach: We have focused the goals of each level around the key advancements of the time period and have provided the player with information about the advancement as the goals are completed. We have used our level design to align the goal of the player (completing the discoverables, nurturing the world around them, and making a beautiful tree) with the concepts which we are looking to teach.
Description: Evergreen is a zen game where you control the growth of a mythical tree with the goal of guiding and nurturing life through Earth’s history.
